Schwarze Löcher wirbeln Galaxien auf
Chandra-Bilder von 56 elliptischen Galaxien haben Belege für unerwartetes Chaos aufgedeckt. Wie diese Auswahl an Röntgenbildern (blau & weiß) und optischen Aufnahmen (grau & Weiß) zeigt, unterscheiden sich die Formen der gewalti-gen Wolken aus heißem Gas, das in diesen Galaxien die Röntgenstrahlung erzeugt, deutlich von der Verteilung von Sternen, die das optische Licht produzieren.
Abgesehen von seltenen Fällen sollte die gewaltsamste Aktivität in isolierten elliptischen Galaxien vor langer Zeit zu einem Ende gekommen sein. Elliptische Galaxien enthalten sehr wenig kaltes Gas und Staub und weit weniger massereiche junge Sterne, die als Supernovae explodieren. Folglich wurde erwartet, daß das heiße interstellare Gas wie die Sterne eine Gleichgewichtsform, allerdings runder, ausgebildet hat.
Überraschenderweise zeigt diese Untersuchung an elliptischen Galaxien, daß die Verteilung von heißem Gas keine Über-einstimmung mit dem optischen Erscheinungsbild aufweist. Eine mächtige Energiequelle muß das heiße Gas herumstoßen und etwa alle hundert Millionen Jahre durcheinanderwirbeln.
Auch wenn Supernovae eine mögliche Energiequelle sind, ist ein wahrscheinlicherer Verdacht ausgemacht worden. Die Wissenschaftler entdeckten eine Beziehung zwischen der Form der heißen Gaswolken und der Energie, die bei Radio-längenwellen durch hochenergetische Elektronen produziert wird. Diese Energiequelle kann zu den supermassereichen Schwarzen Löchern in den Zentralregionen der Galaxien zurückverfolgt werden.
Sich wiederholende explosive Aktivität, gefüttert durch den Einfall von Gas auf die zentralen supermassereichen Schwarzen Löcher, tritt bekanntlich in elliptischen Riesengalaxien auf, die in Galaxienclustern beheimatet sind. Die wissen-schaftliche Auswertung der Chandra-Daten deutet darauf hin, daß das gleiche Phänomen auch in isolierten elliptischen Galaxien auftritt.
